Young Hawks Sweeps Fairfax

Short in man power but determine to win, the seven eligible players (out of thirteen) showed their friends, family members and their school how they coordinated a win against Fairfax High School 52-46.

Early in the game, the young Hawks displayed their determination by controlling the boards, deflecting passes and converting opportunities to points to establish an early lead 10-4 after 5:50 seconds of play. However, Fairfax countered with their weaving offense to end the quarter with 12-10 lead.

As the second quarter rolled, defensive adjustments were made by the young Hawks to counter the weaving offense of Fairfax.  The adjustment asked the players to cut below the defensive screens and anticipate a pass in the paint to the cutting player.  After a few failed attempts, the young Hawks were able to adjust their defense to generate steals and scoring opportunities. Joseph Manga stole the ball multiple times to lead the team in steals (5) and points (28). As young Hawks found their groove, the fruits of the defense generated points and eventually closed the quarter with a lead of 28-21.

Excited about their accomplishments, they entered the third quarter with passion to perform well on both sides of the court. After 3:30 seconds, the young Hawks padded their lead 34 - 25. However as the quarter progressed, the toll of limited rest affected the legs and focus of the young Hawks. Slowly the lead dwindled 36-32 as the fully loaded roster of Fairfax rotated fresh bodies to counter tired Hawks.

As the fourth quarter began the coaching staff utilized several time outs to provide a much needed rest. Although it gave the young Hawks an opportunity to recover, Fairfax continued to rotate fresh bodies to tie the game 46-46 at the 7:02 mark.  Nonetheless, with the win at their reach, the coaching staff asked the tired young Hawks to continue to play smart and aggressive game.  Immediately Timreal Drummond-Wiggins picked the pocket of one of the Fairfax guard at mid court and converted it into a layup. Ensuing free throws by Joseph Manga extended the lead 50-46 with 8 seconds to play. And to close the game an inbound steal under the basket and a layup by Willis Rouse captured the game 52-46 and the season series. Go Hawks!
