Madison Defeats Depleted Hawks

With five players (3 of them starters) suspended from the game, Madison High School controlled the depleted Hawks’ roster on both sides of the court to with the game 40-21.

To compound the manner, the Blizzard on 2016 caused havoc not only on the streets of many parts of Virginia; it also prevented practice for all Fairfax County schools. As a result, efforts from both teams were not as sharp and consistent. During the first quarter the young Hawks opened 1-4 (25%) from the field, 1-2 (50%) from the 3 point area and 1-4 (25%) from the free throw line. However, they managed to lead 6-4 to close the first quarter.

The second quarter was a resemblance of the first.  Both teams were not able to find their groove.  They were not able to convert on layups, shots or were just a step or two slower than normal. Needless to say with under 5 seconds left, Tony Castillo hit an open jumper near the elbow for the Hawks to close the 2nd quarter ahead 15 -14.

As the third quarter rolled, Madison opened up with 9 unanswered points. The young Hawks however, were not able to convert any opportunities to points. They were 0-9 (0%) from the field, 1-2(50%) from the three point line to generate only 3 points for the quarter to trail 31-18 after 3 quarters.

The fourth quarter started and ended similar to the third quarter as the young Hawks only generated 3 points. Madison on the other hand continued to widen the margin. Overall the young Hawks stats were the poorest this season as they shot a dismal 6-38 (15%) from the field, 2-6(33.3%) from the three point line and 3-11(27.3%) from the free throw line. To add to subpar shooting, the young Hawks committed 30 turnovers and only generated a season low of 21 points for the game.

The game will certainly be remembered and will be used as a teaching moment. Go Hawks!
