Thief in the House at Hayfield
The Hayfield softball team held a workday last Saturday, the sort of thing where players spend a few hours doing field maintenance, picking up trash and re-painting the dugouts to ensure everything looks perfect for the playoffs.
With what senior outfielder Hannah Williams has accomplished this season, it'd hardly come as a surprise to her fellow players or coaches if she made off with a can of orange or black paint. And why not? She's stolen everything else this season.
Through 20 games, Williams has amassed 39 stolen bases, enough to tie the Virginia High School League's single-season record, which was set last year by Northwood's Amber Buchanan.
Williams has mixed it up, too. She's stolen home numerous times. She's advanced to second on missed bunt attempts. And she's done it all while only getting thrown out four times -- a 91 percent success rate.
"She pretty much always has a green light," said Hayfield Coach Ron Giovannucci. "I give her a signal every once in a while, but she pretty much does what she wants."
Williams has also tied the VHSL record for runs scored (42), which was set in 2005 by Kelsey Green of Langley. At the plate, Williams is hitting .522 (36 for 69). She's been hit three times and walked 16, setting her on-base percentage at .625.
Besides its leadoff hitter, Hayfield (17-3, 13-1 AAA National) has relied on sophomore pitcher Amber Fowler and junior twins Megan and Sam Perry-Shifflett -- the team's shortstop and catcher, respectively -- for offense.
Fowler leads the team with 32 RBI and boasts a 16-2 record in the pitching circle. She also has a 0.98 ERA and 123 strikeouts spread over 101 innings. Sam Perry-Shifflett has three homers, four triples and 27 RBI, while Megan also has three home runs and 31 RBIs.
