Hawks 2nd Half Rally Falls Short

The Hawks, fresh from their convincing victory over Wakefield HS, took to the road again, this time to visit the Generals of Washington & Lee. Last season, the Hawks had scored a convincing victory over W&L, and hoped to double down on the outcome again. Unfortunately, Hayfield came out flat, and didn’t find their rhythm until the final quarter (when they outscored the Generals 4-2). Washington & Lee vaulted out to an early 7-1 lead, and led comfortably 10-3 at the half. Hayfield rallied in the 2nd half, holding W&L to 4 second half goals, but the mountain was too high to overcome, with Hayfield finally succumbing 14-8 at the final whistle.

Hayfield was paced by Sr. Attack Brendan MacBeth (3 goals, 1 assist), who achieved a vaunted Hat Trick (3 goals in a game) for the 2nd straight game.  MacBeth, a highly respected hockey player, for Hayfield’s club hockey team, plays lacrosse in the off season, and has been a valued member of Hayfield’s varsity lacrosse program for the last 2 years. MacBeth scored two of his three goals in the last 2 minutes of the game, as the Hawks continued to rally.

Jr. Attack Ethan Artero (3 goals, 2 assists), also achieved a Hat Trick for the 2nd straight game, and raised his team lead in points to 10 (7 goals, 3 assists). The highlight goal of the game, came when Artero found Fr. Hayden Page (1 goal, 1assist) on the doorstep of the crease, but Page had to reach up high above his head and snag the pass one handed. Page then had the presence of mind to calming bring the ball back down, and stuff it home for his 2nd goal in his third varsity game. Hayfield battled hard for many possessions, with So. DM Omar Diallo, and So. FO/M Luke Artero leading the way with 7 ground balls apiece.

Other notable efforts included: So. Attack Patrick Manley had 4 groundballs, and 1 assist, LSM Kody Venable had 3 groundballs, and Jr. FO/M Clint Pearson had 4 groundballs, and 1 goal.

Goals/Assists/Pts. Scored By: E. Artero (3/2/5), L. Artero (0/0/0), Marshall (0/0/0), Page (1/1/2), Manley, Jr. (0/1/1), MacBeth (3/1/4), Pearson (1/0/1)
