Artero Rises to the Challenge; Raiders Defeat Hawks 14-8
Injuries have plagued Hayfield’s Boys Varsity Lax, but now it is reaching a new level! On Monday night, Hayfield seemed poised to achieve their first win of the season. Their offense is finally starting to mesh, and they recorded their first 5 assist game of the season on Monday night. Unfortunately, the injury jinx struck again, with So. JV Goalie Will Werner (who was filling in for varsity starter Jake Fischer), took a shot to the head in the JV game, sustaining a minor concussion.
In stepped Jr. FO/M Luke Artero, who assumed the goalie position (stepping into goal for first time since youth lax in middle school). Overall, Artero was exceptional in net, stopping 14 shots, while the defense in front of him made just enough plays to keep Hayfield close. Hayfield’s defense was led by its leader, Jr. D Kody Venable, who scooped up a team high 5 ground balls, had several take away checks, and even cranked two shots on goal after full field clears.
Hayfield’s offense finally geared up in the 3rd quarter, winning that frame, 4-3. The offense was led by So. A Hayden Page (4 goals), who registered his 3rd multi-goal game of the season, and Sr. A Clint Pearson (3 goals), who achieved a 4th straight hat trick (3+ goals)! Jr. M Angel Medrano (1 goal, 1 assist) achieved his first multi-point game of his varsity career. Jr. LSM Matt Gonzales (1 assist) tallied his first varsity point as well!
