Majors Gain Season Split, Defeat Hawks 11-9

The Boys Varsity came into Monday night’s game, excited from their previous Thursday’s victory vs. Annandale, hoping to sweep their crosstown rivals; The Mt. Vernon Majors. Unfortunately for Hayfield, the Majors were not going to let that happen on their home turf. The Hawks got off to a very slow start, only managing 4 first half goals (after scoring seven 1st QUARTER goals against Mt. Vernon the first time around). The Hawks finally managed to get their much-improved offense rolling late in the 2nd half, outscoring the Majors 4-1 in the final period, but the hole was dug too deep. In the end, the Hawks fell at Mt. Vernon 11-9, in a match up that could reoccur in a few weeks, when the Gunston District Tournament starts.

Hayfield was again led by Sr. Brian Marshall (4 goals, 5 groundballs), who increased his team lead in goals to 20 goals (21 pts total) for the 2019 campaign. Jr. Hayden Page (1 goal, 1 assist, 5 groundballs), increased his team lead in assists to 9, and his point total to 15 points (2nd on team). Sr. Kody Venable (1 goal, 5 groundballs) scored his first goal of the season, and Hayfield’s 3rd from the close defense position. Venable also has 3 assists this year (2 of those points vs. Mt. Vernon this season). Sr. Luke Artero (2 goals, 5 groundballs), scored 2 goals for the third straight game, giving him 10 goals and 13 points for the 2019 spring season. Artero is currently 2nd on the team with those 10 scores. Sr. Angel Medrano (1 goal, 1 assist, 5 groundballs) tallied his 5th goal of the season in the 1st quarter, on an assist by Sr. Amadu Turay (1 assist), who now has 3 assists this year, combined with 7 goals for 10 total points, giving Hayfield four players with 10 plus points this season.
