Hayfield’s Wings Clipped by Wolverines

Hayfield’s Boys Varsity returned from their three weeks break from lacrosse, traveling to West Potomac HS to challenge the Gunston District’s lone undefeated team; The West Potomac Wolverines. Based upon their earlier game (11-4 loss) vs. the Wolverines, the Hawks were confident that they would fare better than other district opponents, but West Potomac tallied 4 goals in the first 12 minutes, to take a 4-1 lead, and never looked back! Hayfield lost it’s third straight game, falling to 3-6 on the 2019 Spring season.

Despite it’s recent losing streak, the Hawks have their best team in the past five years, and still currently hold the third seed in the Gunston District, with one remaining district game to play, vs. the Atoms of Annandale HS. If/when victorious on Friday, the Hawks will have 3 wins in district play, and will be able to vault over the 4-5 seed play-in game.

Hayfield was led again in scoring by Sr. Brian Marshall (2 goals), who now has 24 goals on the season, combined with 4 assists, leads the Hawks in goals, and points (28).

Jr. Hayden Page (2 assists, 1 groundball), raised his team assist lead to 11, and combined with his 7 goals, is second on the team in points (18). Sr. Jamin Phillips (1 goal) scored Hayfield’s first goal of the night, briefly equalizing the game, and raised his season tally to 15 goals on the season. Phillips now has 17 total pts for the season, solidifying his hold on 2nd place on the team in goals, and third in points. Sr. Amadu Turay (1 goal, 1 groundball), scored Hayfield’s 2nd goal, giving him 14 points (11 goals, 3 assists), good for 5th place in team points, one behind Sr. Luke Artero’s 15 points (11 goals, 4 assists). Recent JV call up, So. Eric Uehling scored his first varsity point, feeding Marshall for his team leading 24th goal of the season.

Sr. Goaltender Jake Fischer kept the game respectable, with 19 saves on 45 shots. Fischer now has 111 saves on the season (12.33 saves/game), and has allowed 88 goals (9.78 goals/avg.).
