Hawks Stumble in Season Opener
The Hayfield softball team started its 2010 campaign with a 9-2 loss at home against a tough Bishop O’Connell squad. The game started in promising fashion as sophomore pitcher Amber Fowler struck out the first three Knights she faced, but the visitors strung together some timely hits in the second inning to jump to a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks made a game of it in the bottom of the third inning when back to back doubles by Fowler and senior RF Hannah Williams together with a single by junior SS Megan Perry-Shifflett cut the lead to 5-2. Despite the loss, Fowler totaled 10 strikeouts in the contest. The Hawks will have another chance to tune up in a scrimmage tonight against last year’s Northern Region Championship runners up, the Centreville Wildcats. The Hawks begin play on Saturday in the annual Hayfield Spring Break Tournament against Annandale.
