Hayfield Bats Roar to Life in National District Debut

After scoring a combined five runs in the first two regular season games of the season, the Hayfield Hawks softball team was looking to get its offense on track in their first AAA National District game. Mission accomplished.

Junior catcher Samantha Perry-Shifflett led a 25-hit attack as the Hawks defeated the J.E.B Stuart Raiders 39-2 in 5 innings. Perry-Shifflett went 4 for 6 at the plate with three triples and 7 RBI’s. Senior right fielder Hannah Williams had a 5 for 7 game with four doubles and 5 RBI’s. Williams and Perry-Shifflett each scored six runs on the night, one away from tying the Virginia High School League record of seven in a game. Sophomore Amber Fowler had an inside-the-park homerun and drove in three, while pitching a two-hitter, striking out nine Raiders.

Other Hawks with big nights included freshman 1B Taylor Neuhart with four singles and four RBIs; junior SS Megan Perry-Shifflett, 4-6, 3 RBIs; junior CF Jessica Reynolds and senior LF Kolbie Franco with 3 RBI’s in the contest.

The Hawks (2-1, 1-0) will host their first National District game against Falls Church Jaguars on Thursday, Mar 25 at 6:00.
