Hawks Run Over Stuart 15-0; Remain Perfect in National District
Hayfield improved to 11-2 (7-0, National) with a 15-0 win over the J.E.B. Stuart at home on Tuesday night. The Hawks received a razor-sharp pitching performance from Amber Fowler who no-hit the Raiders in a 5-inning mercy rule game. Fowler struck out nine, and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by Angela Sudik (2-2, 2B, 3 RBI), Amber Fowler(3-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Sam Perry-Shifflett (2-4, 3 RBI), Hannah Williams (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 Runs) and Taylor Neuhart (3-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 3 Runs).
Despite the score, Stuart played tough defense led by LF Nore’ll Marshall who made tremendous catches on balls smashed to left by Megan Perry-Shifflett, Williams, and Kelly Sheaff which would have led to more runs.
The Hawks continued to run rampant on the basepaths with 20 stolen bases in the game, led by Sam Perry-Shifflett’s 5 steals.
In what is sure to be a record-breaking season for many team marks, Sam Perry-Shifflett broke her own Hayfield season record of 14 walks set in 2008 with her 15th, and Hannah Williams broke the 10-year-old Hawks record for stolen bases in a season set by Crystal Tweedy in 2000 (22) notching her 26th swipe last night. Several more team records are set to be eclipsed by the high-flying 2010 squad in upcoming games.
