Hawks Fumble Away 1st District Loss to Scrappy Patriots

The Hayfield Hawks dropped their first National District game of the season on the road to the Yorktown Patriots on Friday night.   The combination of uncharacteristic errors, timely Patriot hits, and the element of facing a team on the ropes in their home park spelled defeat for the Hawks.

The Hawks (16-3, 12-1) blanked the Patriots (13-6, 11-2) by a 2-0 score in their first meeting on April 14th, and entered the game as the clear favorite looking to clinch the top seed in next week's National District Championship Tournament with a win.  Yorktown, on the other hand, was in the midst of a three-game losing streak with losses to powerhouses Bishop O'Connell and Loudoun Valley, and a surprise shutout loss to district rival Washington-Lee.
In a battle of sophomore pitchers, the Patriots benefitted from an excellent performance from Katie Bauman, who struck out nine and walked three. Hayfield’s Amber Fowler also pitched well enough to win, striking out six and giving up just eight hits - but the three errors behind her proved too costly.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the third after a two-out rally began with a Hannah Williams single.  After Sam Perry-Shifflett walked and Fowler reached on an error at first, Megan Perry-Shifflett pounded an infield single off of the leg of Bauman to score Williams for the Hawks' only run.  Hayfield threatened in the 6th with back-to-back doubles by Megan Perry-Shifflett and Taylor Neuhart; and in the 7th after walks by Angela Sudik and Sam Perry-Shifflett, but could not capitalize. Laurie Pinkerton and Charlotte Batdorf each had two hits and the pair drove in four of the five Yorktown runs.

The Hawks will next look to wrap up the regular season at home on Senior Night, Tuesday, May 11th against the Washington-Lee Generals at 6pm.
