Williams Runs Into VA State Record Book as Hawks Clinch District Top Seed
On Hayfield’s 2010 Senior Night, Hannah Williams made the most of the last regular season game of her career by tying two Virginia High School League records in a hard fought 2-0 win over Washington-Lee. Williams scored both runs to push her season total to a record tying 42, and matched the previous state record of 39 stolen bases in a season. With the score knotted at 0-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Williams led off with a walk and was moved to second on fellow senior Kolbie Franco’s sacrifice bunt. Williams moved to third on a passed ball and scored after Amber Fowler singled to left to give the Hawks the lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Williams hit a one-out single up the middle, stole second and raced home on Fowler's double to center.  The two RBI's in the game gave Fowler a team-leading total of 32 on the year.
In the circle, Fowler allowed back-to-back hits to Jenny Peel and Jen Berry in the top of the first inning, but worked out of the jam by striking out Hannah Swan with the bases loaded to end the threat. Fowler settled down after that and only allowed three runners aboard for the rest of the game. She allowed four hits, struck out six and walked one.
Generals’ freshman Lillian Prins, who shutout Yorktown 4-0 last week, allowed only five hits and struck out three. Both teams played spotless defense with no errors in the game.
During the pregame, the Hayfield seniors were honored for their contributions by coaches and teammates, and the Hawks faithful were treated to a beautiful performance of The Star-Spangled Banner sung by senior Meghan Peterson.
With the victory, the Hawks clinched the top seed in next week’s National District Tournament and will host a quarterfinal game on Monday May 17th.
