Neuhart, Sam Perry-Shifflett Power Record-Breaking Hawks into District Semis Over Falls Church 25-0
Taylor Neuhart batted 5-5 and drove in 6 RBIs while Sam Perry-Shifflett crushed her 4th homer of the season in a 25-0 National District Tournament Quarterfinal defeat of Falls Church. Perry-Shifflett was 3-3 and blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the 3rd inning that was estimated by head coach Ron Giovannucci at over 225 ft to almost dead centerfield. Perry-Shifflett tied the school home run record of 4 set by Caity Butler in 2004.
Amber Fowler pitched a dominating game allowing a single in the first at-bat of the game and retiring the next 15 batters in a row for the mercy-rule shutout. Fowler struck out nine in the game to push her season total to 132, lower her ERA to 0.93, and move to 17-2 on the year.
Hayfield shattered the Virginia High School League record for runs scored in a season with 279. The previous record was established by Langley in 2005 with 263, followed by Yorktown’s 245 in 2008. Prior to tonight’s game, Hannah Williams was tied for the VHSL individual season records for runs scored (42) and stolen bases (39), but broke them both in the contest. Williams scored three times for a total of 45 on the year, and became the first player in Virginia softball history to steal 40 bases in a season.
Megan Perry-Shifflett and Williams had 3 RBI apiece while Fowler and Angela Sudik drove in two each. Kelly Sheaff scored 4 runs and stole three bases, and in addition to Williams -  Neuhart, the Perry-Shifflett twins, Fowler, and Taryn McElhenny each scored three times.
Hayfield (18-3, 14-1) moves on to play a National District Semifinal on Friday, May 21 at 6pm. The Hawks will host Mount Vernon who advanced with a 3-0 victory over Stuart. The other semifinal will see Washington-Lee face Yorktown.
