As Easy as 1-2-3-4; Hawks Cruise into District Final With 10-2 Victory over Mount Vernon
The Hayfield Hawks batting order has been wreaking havoc on opposing pitching all season. The onslaught continued tonight in a National District Semifinal matchup against Mount Vernon that saw the Hawks prevail 10-2. After spotting the Majors to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first, the Hawks came back in the bottom of the frame to take early command of the game.
Hannah Williams smashed Olivia Compton’s first pitch of the game for a single off the outstretched glove of Mt Vernon 3B Anne-Marie Warren. Catcher Sam Perry-Shifflett singled hard up the middle, and Amber Fowler singled through short to load the bases. The No. 4 batter, cleanup hitter Megan Perry-Shifflett, then made Compton pay with a line drive double that cleared the bases, and gave Fowler all the runs she would need for the victory.
Fowler and Sam Perry-Shifflett went 4-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles each. Megan also had two doubles, along with her three RBIs.
The 10 runs in the game extend the Hawks' (19-3, 15-1) Virginia High School League single season runs record to 289. The Hawks will host the 2010 National District Championship Game on Tuesday, May 25th against Yorktown. The two squads have met twice this season with the home team victorious in each contest.
